Belgium FM: US-Israeli war on Iran is violation of International law

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot has criticized the United States and the Israeli regime for launching a joint military aggression against Iran, saying the action violates international law.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot has criticized the United States and the Israeli regime for launching a joint military aggression against Iran, saying the action violates international law.

Speaking to the state broadcaster, RTBF on Monday, Prevot said it must be acknowledged that the way the action was conducted against Iran did not meet the standards of international law.

Despite claiming Belgium to be an unwavering defender of international law, Prevot however, fell short of condemning the US-Israel aggression and intervention in Iran or the . He only stressed the importance of recalling the purpose of international law.

The top Belgian diplomat further referred to the Iran-US talks, saying it was regrettable that “diplomacy was unable to achieve the expected results.”

Calling for de-escalation and setting aside the weapons “as quickly as possible,” Prevot said, “Our aim is to genuinely call for restraint, and for a return to respect for diplomacy and international law.”

He also voiced concern over the UN inaction in the conflict, warning that it should not be reduced to an international agency focused merely on human rights and climate issues.

The joint military aggression by the criminal United States and the Israeli regimes against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which resulted in the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, began at the early hours of February 28, 2026; while indirect negotiations between Iran and the US, mediated by some regional countries, were underway.

Analysts believe the actions demonstrated that it does not adhere to the principles of dialogue, building trust, and resolving disputes peacefully, and continues to use military options as a tool for political pressure.

In response to the joint US-Israeli military move, the Islamic Republic of Iran gave a decisive, targeted, and appropriate response to aggressors. As part of Iran’s legitimate response, military and security positions of the Israeli regime in various areas of the occupied Palestinian lands, as well as American military bases, facilities, and related interest sections in the region, were precisely targeted with missiles, and drones.

Iranian officials have made it clear that these operations were carried out within the framework of the Islamic Republic’s inherent right of self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, with the aim of putting deterrence, preventing the continuation of aggression, and imposing costs on the aggressors. The Islamic Republic has warned that the continuation or expansion of the aggression will be met with a stronger and broader response.
